What is EPON (GEPON) OLT: Functions, Types, Specifications

EPON OLT is a device that acts as the service provider endpoint of a passive optical network. It means that the optical line terminal (OLT) supports Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) that a kind of technology provides multiple services by adopting point to multipoint passive optical transmission. 

Functions of EPON OLT:

1. To perform a conversion between the electrical signals used by the service provider’s equipment and the fiber optic passive component signals used by the passive optical network.
2. To coordinate the multiplexing between the conversion devices on the other end of that network which is called either optical network terminals (ONT) or optical network units (ONU).

Types of V-SOL EPON OLT:
There are mainly 4 types of EPON OLT including mini/4/8/16 ports EPON OLT.

Application of EPON OLT:
EPON OLT can be applied to many scenarios in  PONs. Here we take an example with the highway Tunnel solution. As shown in the frame, it's used to access the data sent from terminals and the switch is responsible for converging the data. Therefore, the EPON OLT V1600D4-DP downlinks to ONUs and uplinks to switch.
